Jeff Tweedy, frontman of Wilco, has announced a remarkable new project: Twilight Override, a sprawling triple album featuring 30 tracks. The record is slated for release on September 26, 2025, via the indie label dBpm Records.
The announcement, made on July 15, 2025, came alongside four singles: “One Tiny Flower,” “Out in the Dark,” “Stray Cats in Spain,” and “Enough.” These tracks offer a potent preview of the album’s tone—a deep dive into the darker, more contemplative side of our current era.
Recorded at Tweedy’s Chicago studio, the Loft, Twilight Override builds on his 2020 solo record Love Is the King. It features collaborations with several artists, including James Elkington, Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart of Finom, and Liam Kazar. Notably, Tweedy’s sons—Spencer and Sammy—also contribute, adding a deeply personal dimension to the project.
In the accompanying press statement, Tweedy reflected on the creative impetus behind the album: “That sense of decline is hard to ignore… Twilight Override is my effort to overwhelm it right back. … Creativity eats darkness.” He described the record as a response to societal malaise: a defiant step against a backdrop of cultural entropy. “When you align yourself with creation … you inherently take a side against destruction,” he said.
To support Twilight Override, Tweedy will embark on a full-band tour later this year. The North American leg will run through October and November 2025, with a second European leg planned for February 2026. The tour lineup will feature onstage contributions from several collaborators on the album—Sima Cunningham, Macie Stewart, and Liam Kazar — promising richly layered performances that echo the album’s collaborative spirit.
This release marks Tweedy’s first full solo album in five years, following Love Is the King in 2020. The scale of Twilight Override—a triple album with 30 tracks—is a bold statement in today’s streaming era, where such lengthy, cohesive projects are rare.
Tweedy’s framing of the album as a creative stand against a “bottomless basket of rock bottom” positions it within a lineage of artists using their work to counterbalance cultural anxiety. It also aligns with the broader trend of legacy artists embracing expansive artistic statements in response to uncertain times.
Thematically, the record is expected to blend introspection, societal commentary, and a fight against despair. Musically, fans can anticipate Tweedy’s signature blend of folk, rock, and alt-country, now expanded through the voices of his collaborators. The tour offers a chance to see how these new songs transform on stage—likely with rich textures, ensemble arrangements, and perhaps rare previews of new material.
With Twilight Override, Jeff Tweedy demonstrates both prolific creativity and a deep engagement with the world’s complexities. The album and accompanying tour promise to be major moments for fans of his solo work and for those drawn to thoughtful, cathartic music.
