Australian psychedelic rock innovators King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have unveiled their 27th studio album, Phantom Island, released on June 13, 2025, via their own label, (P)Doom Records. This latest project marks a significant departure from their typical sound, embracing orchestral rock elements and showcasing the band’s versatility.
Developed concurrently with their 2024 album Flight b741, Phantom Island offers a more subdued, orchestral experience. The inspiration for this orchestral direction stemmed from the band’s 2023 performance at the Hollywood Bowl, where they collaborated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This experience led to the inclusion of British composer Chad Kelly in the project, further enriching the album’s orchestral texture .
The album’s promotion included the release of singles such as “Phantom Island,” “Deadstick,” and “Grow Wings and Fly,” each accompanied by music videos. Additionally, a behind-the-scenes documentary titled The Making of Phantom Island was released on June 3, providing fans with insight into the album’s creation .
In support of Phantom Island, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have announced a U.S. tour featuring performances with various city-specific orchestras, conducted by Sarah Hicks. This tour aims to bring the album’s orchestral elements to life, offering audiences a unique live experience. The tour will include performances at major venues such as the TD Pavilion at the Mann in Philadelphia, Forest Hills Stadium in New York, and the Ravinia Festival in Illinois .
The tour will conclude with a three-day camping residency dubbed “Field of Vision” in Buena Vista, Colorado, from August 15 to 17, 2025. This event will feature a mix of orchestral and traditional rock performances, providing fans with an immersive experience .
Phantom Island has received generally positive reviews, with critics praising the band’s willingness to explore new musical territories. The album’s blend of orchestral arrangements with psychedelic rock elements has been described as both ambitious and refreshing, further solidifying King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s reputation as one of the most innovative bands in contemporary music.
